Fears over Powys turbine lorries

Plans for a 800 wind turbines in Powys will see approximately 3,000 giant lorries travelling through villages on the Shropshire border to transport equipment, it was claimed today.

Jim Read, managing director of Newgate Clocks Ltd, in Oswestry, wants people living along the A483 route between Oswestry and Welshpool to wake up to the danger coming their way.

He said: “A collection of farms containing 800 wind turbines is almost impossible to visualise, as is seeing the infrastructure being delivered along Oswestry bypass through Pant and Llanymynech.

“The turbines themselves, even though delivered in sections, are transported on the biggest vehicles and loads people will have seen.

“Road changes are already being made and many more still to come, including the rerouting of overhead cables, and removal of lighting and street furniture in some towns and villages.”

Mr Read, of Penrhos, said he had become suspicious when he noticed the new Four Crosses bypass had been made with a dropped curb on the island.

He added: “Look at the new roundabout and notice the centre of it has a slice removed from one side to accommodate these massive vehicles and loads. Proof that Wales knew of their plans long before they released the extent of the turbine farms and pylons.”

He said about 3,000 special loads will go through Llanymynech and Pant during the six years it will take to build the windfarm.

“There are also reports that in total there will be 800,000 additional vehicle movements to build the windfarms,” he warned.

No one was available to comment from the Welsh Assembly.
