More wind farms planned in county

Sanilac County News, sanilaccountynews.mihomepaper.com 11 May 2011

There will be more wind turbines coming to Sanilac County.

DTE Energy has announced plans to build its first wind farms in the Sanilac and Huron counties.

According to Scott Simons, media relations for DTE Energy, they plan to put about 20 wind turbines on 2,000 acres in Sanilac County’s Minden and Delaware townships.

“Because the turbines to be used have not yet been selected, and the output of the turbines will determine how many are needed, I can’t give you a precise number,” Simons explained. The company intends to install about 50 in the two counties.

The company is reviewing bids from turbine manufacturers. They have yet to select a construction company or begin the permitting process. DTE Energy expect to start construction next year.

Altogether the three wind farms will generate approximately 110 megawatts of electricity.

The wind farm development is part of DTE Energy’s plan to add 1,200 megawatts of renewable power or about 10 percent of its power by 2015. The company plans to own facilities to supply up to half of that and contract for the rest.

They already have partnered with Invenergy on a 200 megawatt project in Gratiot County, and will assume ownership of 90 megawatts upon its completion in early 2012.

They have no partnerships with Exelon, which has started building its own wind farm in Minden, Delaware and Marion townships, and purchased John Deere’s wind farm in Huron County.
