Two seemingly unrelated items in the May 6 paper brought back feelings of sickness and disgust after a recent trip. In a letter about the Columbia River Crossing, Kevin Felts bemoans the fact that “our forefathers buried its beauty with a mishmash of commercial interests.” On the next page, we are told that “wind power could double” by 2025 because of aggressive mandates for renewable energy.
I traveled the Columbia Gorge last week for the first time in five years. I found that hundreds of huge, ugly, bird-killing behemoths jutting in unison from the earth have raped the views I once enjoyed.
Why is it that we won’t allow someone to build a house in the gorge that people can see from the highway, but the government will allow the pathetic visual pollution of thousands of propeller blades spinning swiftly to what end? So we can sell overpriced energy to California?
