Plea to remove 'white elephant' wind turbines

ABC News, www.abc.net.au/ 3 May 2011

A Hobart Alderman wants wind turbines on Hobart’s Marine Board Building removed immediately.

The turbines were shut down last August when they were damaged by high winds.

Under a planning permit they must be removed if they fail to operate for 180 days, but Alderman Ron Christie says eight months on they are still idle.

“It’s a white elephant and yes we are the laughing stock in terms of the number of tourists that come down and say what are those things,” he said.

Last September the company which installed the turbines said new parts should arrivie from China within six weeks.

Alderman Christie says that was then pushed back to April, but there is still no sign of progress.

“That has not happened so the question has be asked, ‘what is happening to the tubines on that building?'”

“We’ve been receiving a lot of broken promises and I think they should come down.”

The company has been contacted for comment.
