Power to the people

The wind farm plans for Hagg Wood have divided York people between those directly affected and those who will not have a shadow cast over their homes.

This in-fighting and name-calling is food and drink to the developers and to Askham Bryan College, the prime mover in this sorry business.

York people need to join together against this intrusion into our beautiful environment.

This development will almost certainly not do what is claimed for it. Instead, there are risks to human health and well-being as well as dangers for wildlife and the environment.

Yes, and the turbines are unsightly. York Minster is awesome, these things are not.

York, like many cities, needs to reduce its carbon footprint, but this development – too big to ignore and too small to make any difference – is not the way.

The output of the turbines at Hagg Wood could be matched or exceeded by turning on street lights an hour later, unplugging televisions overnight or any number of other actions.

It is up to the governors of Askham Bryan College to listen to the legitimate concerns of residents. It’s not too late for them to withdraw from this folly.

Dr William Owen, Labour candidate for Rural West York, Oakville Street, York.
