The Maryland Chamber of Commerce has come out against Gov. Martin O’Malley’s plan to require utilities to buy offshore wind power, which would put at least a hundred turbines off the state’s coast.

That state’s Public Service Commission has estimated that the average homeowner’s electric bill would increase between 92 cents and $3 per month under the plan.

“This bill would be very costly to all customers and areas in Maryland. This is not the appropriate tool to address increased wind generation,” the Chamber said on its website.

Observers say the bill is unlikely to clear key committees this year, as lawmakers in both chambers have expressed concerns about cost.
