Wind turbine cited as aircraft hazard

The operator of Rednal Airfield says a proposed 200ft-high wind turbine could cause a hazard to aircraft.

Nesscliffe farmers J. C. & M. W. Suckley have submitted an application for a single turbine on land at Abbots Moor Farm, Haughton, West Felton which it is said will supply enough ‘green’ electricity to power around 175 homes.

But the airport’s operator Roger Reeves says he has never been officially consulted on the proposals for the site which is at the western edge of an arable field east of Rednal Airfield.

He says the proposals could make the airfield unusable and lead to the demise of his business.

“It is my strong belief and understanding that the proposed wind turbine development in such close proximity to my business will render our essential aeronautical services and aviation facilities as being unusable, thereby jeopardising the future success of my business,” he concluded.

In his submission he said that as well as the physical presence of the turbine, they could also create a distraction to pilots and cause unexpected wind turbulence which could be a danger to small planes.

Shropshire Council, which is considering the proposal at its north planning committee meeting in Oswestry on April 26, is recommending the application for approval saying it contributed locally to the objective of achieving the UK Renewable Energy Strategy target and providing more secure and diverse sources of energy supply.

West Felton Parish Council has made no comment on the application.
