The News-Tribune recently featured a news release from Wind Force (Pinnacle Wind Farm starts construction, April 12) and it contains some misinformation. I know you are a stickler for accurate reporting, so I bring to your attention the statement, “The wind farm will generate … approximately 55 megawatts of electricity, enough power for over 14,000 households.”
The statement would have been correct if it had said, “the capacity to produce” (that much electricity), but it did not, and therefore was not a truthful statement. It is well appreciated that industrial turbines produce 30 percent or less electricity than their certified capacity. In fact, there is evidence that number is significantly lower.
A more accurate estimate of power to be produced by this project is enough for 4,200 households, not the reported 14,000. The inefficiency of industrial wind facilities and their dependance upon fossil fuel for back-up is the underlying reason why industrial wind cannot significantly help our need for additional energy.
The construction phase is in place. Why does the wind industry continue to MISINFORM and CONFUSE?
