COLEBROOK – As the clock ticks toward a June deadline for the Connecticut Siting Council to rule on proposed wind turbine projects, the town is trying to ensure it is paid its fair share of taxes if the project is approved.

First Selectman Thomas McKeon said Wednesday that the town’s attorney is negotiating with BNE Energy of West Hartford, which has proposed building six wind turbines in town to generate electricity.

McKeon declined to elaborate on details of the arrangement because it is not final, but said the town is working with BNE to ensure that they will pay their local taxes even if the state legislature declares wind turbines tax exempt in the future. “It would ensure that the town is still compensated,” he said.

Patty McQueen, a spokeswoman for BNE, confirmed that the company and Colebrook are talking. “They are working on that now,” she said.
