Time to recall Brewster selectmen

Cape Cod Times, www.capecodonline.com 20 April 2011Cape Cod Times, www.capecodonline.com 20 April 2011

The Brewster Board of Selectmen has really dropped the ball this year. We are asked to vote on a Proposition 2½ override of more than $800,000.

In the past, the department heads were given direction on how much money they could spend, but not this year. This $800,000 is in addition to the 2½ percent that they can legally raise the budget.

The town is a “big business” and it should act like one. If we are not the only town to vote the override down, the schools will have to go back and come up with a more reasonable budget to reflect declining enrollments. The board is walking away from our town beaches, a town highlight, and will do little to repair them as the past generations have done for us.

The board is pushing ahead with the wind turbine issue even though many residents want no part of them. The selectmen passed new legislation to install turbines just to circumvent our planning board.

It is time for residents of Brewster to follow Chatham and circulate recall petitions for several selectmen. One has to question if they have the best interests of the town in mind when making some of these decisions.
