Not listening to our ‘No’

NPower Renewables, a German multi-national energy producer, has been making strenuous efforts to take control of a scenic, magnificent upland area north of Swansea in the parish of Mawr called Mynydd y Gwair to industrialise with their plans to erect huge wind turbines.

Their pamphlets to the local community, exhibitions and consultation process held to provide information clearly stated throughout this time of the “importance to allow everyone to let their views be known and which will be taken into account.”

There were three local polls in the Mawr parish, one funded by the WDA Assembly to the local Development Trust who gave a resounding no, The West Glamorgan Commoners Association who stood to pocket £700,000 compensation gave a resounding no, the planning application made by npower to our elected councillors was given an overwhelming no and yet npower continued with an application for a public inquiry which once more resulted in an Assembly ruling of no.

They are now taking the Wales Assembly Government and Swansea Council to the High Court of Justice in London for a judicial review which will cost Swansea Council a possible £1 million legal bill. So much for listening to the local community and its elected representatives.

We ignore this threat to our independence, our countryside and our elected representatives at our peril.
