Kincardine increases turbine setbacks

Kincardine council has approved a new wind turbine development policy.

The policy calls for setbacks to be substantially increased to 3,000 meters in urban areas; 2750 meters in rural hamlets and 800 meters in farm areas.

Paul Austin, spokesperson for Acciona that is developing a wind farm project in Armow isn’t sure they can abide by those rules but he says they’re going to try.

Austin made a presentation to councillors saying they want to address concerns of setbacks, electrical collector systems underground, and a navigation light mitigation plan just to name a few issues.

He says the Armow project, if approved, calls for 80-megawatts of production.

Austin says using the smallest turbine producing 1.5 megawatts would result in 53 turbines in the Armow region.

Austin says he’s receiving calls from farmers who say unless they can strike a deal with the turbine developers, they’ll literally have to sell the farm.

He says farmers would make an additional 10-to-20-thousand-dollars a year if they host a wind turbine.
