Path clear for a windpark at Cathkin Braes

One of the last obstacles to the construction of a windpark in Cathkin Braes has been removed.

Glasgow City Council were told last week that the Court of Session had approved a petition that allows Cathkin Braes Country Park to be leased for 25 years to accommodate a wind turbine.

However, the news is not likely to be welcomed by everyone, among them Cathkin Braes Golf Club, who submitted an objection to the plans when they first went in front of the planning department in 2008. The proposal was originally deemed to be contrary to the council’s Greenbelt policy.

The windpark has been earmarked for an area between Cathkin Road and Castlemilk and will stretch to Carmunnock.

Councillor Jim Coleman, Glasgow’s Executive Member for Land and Environmental Services, said: “We’re obviously delighted with the decision which will ultimately help create a vibrant and successful future for Glasgow, not only as Scotland’s greenest city but as one of the most sustainable in Europe.”

The news has been welcomed by the Green Party, who now want Cathkin Braes placed on the Common Good Fund asset register.

Green councillor Martha Wardrop said: “Cathkin Braes Country Park is part of the common good, and as such, any income from the wind turbine on Cathkin Braes has to benefit residents within the city boundaries. Cathkin Braes must now be placed on the Common Good Fund asset register.”
