The Riga Township Board and Planning Commission will host a special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19.
At its regular monthly meeting Monday evening, the board read aloud a letter from the Interstate Informed Citizens Coalition, a group of local residents who have expressed opposition to the development of industrial wind energy projects in the area. The letter requested that the Riga Township board and planning commission hold a special meeting the evening of April 18 for the IICC to present its arguments against industrial wind projects. The letter said the information presented would include testimony from an acoustics expert who has testified that the noise produced by wind turbines can have adverse health effects on nearby residents.
The board read another letter from wind developer Exelon Wind. William Scott, Exelon’s director of government affairs, requested that Exelon be given “the opportunity to present its views and answer questions on the issue of winds turbines at the special meeting.”
Both organizations offered to cover some or all of the expenses of the meeting. However, the board, reluctant to accept money from either party, decided that the meeting would be funded by the township. As the fire hall is occupied the evening of April 18, the meeting was scheduled for 7 p.m. April 19.
