Questions over wind company future

The Tasmanian Government has refused to reveal the future of its joint venture wind energy company Roaring 40s.

Roaring 40s is owned by Hydro Tasmania and China Light and Power.

Liberal Energy spokesman Matthew Groom has told Parliament he has doubts about Roading 40s’ future because another company, China Datang Corporation, claims to be negotiating with Hydro on wind projects.

The Energy Minister Bryan Green says he knows what is going on but can not reveal commercial arrangements.

“With respect to Hydro Tasmania’s operations and their joint venture opportunities and partnerships, I will leave it to Hydro Tasmania to make any announcements with respect to how they might move forward with respect to their investments here in Tasmania and Australia,” the minister said.

Mr Green says the Musselroe project will proceed, despite changes to Roaring 40s.

Roaring 40s is trying to secure finance for the $400 million wind farm.

“What I can say though is that as far as I’m concerned the advice I’ve received from Hydro Tasmania is that we are in a good position and will be in a good position to move forward with the Musselroe development here in Tasmania.”

Hydro Tasmania has been contacted for comment.
