Not allowing any shadow flicker on the property of those who haven’t signed an agreement with a wind energy developer might be too harsh, Mason County Planning Commissioners decided Monday.

The planning commission Monday rescinded an earlier vote allowing such a measure.

Commissioner Mike Schneider, who on March 21 made a motion to ban any flicker at the property line of an “unpooled” parcel, asked Monday to rescind his motion, saying after doing some research he had not found another ordinance that strict.

Commissioners did not come to any agreements Monday on how much wind turbine shadow flicker to allow, but may discuss the issue at its meeting tonight if Mason County Zoning Director Mary Reilly can get enough additional information on questions posed by commissioners.

Commissioners also made recommendations Monday in several other areas for possible zoning ordinance amendments. Sections on complaint resolution, a study on the turbines effect on birds, mechanical failure, signal interference and roads will now be forwarded for legal review.

The commission meets at 6:30 tonight at the Mason-Lake ISD building on U.S. 10 to deal with the following wind turbine issues, shadow flicker, waivers and performance review, and to handle other non-wind business.
