Windfarm bid wins backing from planners

Plans to build a windfarm near Longhorsley have been recommended for approval, despite objections from parish councils, Northumberland National Park and Newcastle International Airport.

The application for six-turbines on land west of Wingates will be decided by Northumberland County Council’s Planning and Environment Committee on Tuesday.

If approved, it will see more than two-and-a-half hectares of land on a 106-hectare site transformed into a windfarm.

Objections have been submitted by Brinkburn and Hesleyhurst, Longhorsley, Netherwitton and Nunnykirk parish councils, stating that the development would have a negative impact on the scenic nature of the area, a detrimental effect on tourism and that it would be visible from numerous locations.

Newcastle Airport has said that the turbines would be visible from its primary radar and would have an impact on airport operations and safety.

In total 75 letters of objection, alongside a petition with 141 names, were submitted, along with 57 letters of support.

Council planning officers believe the site is suitable for the development and say it would not have a significant adverse impact on the character of the landscape.
