What Hy-Line will offer is more like industrio-tours

Cape Cod Times, www.capecodonline.com 30 March 2011

“Ecotourism” clearly applies to unique destinations like the Grand Canyon, Galapagos Islands and “¦ Nantucket Sound. Ferry tours of a massive wind turbine factory would seem to fall into a different category.

Wikipedia defines ecotourism as “responsible travel to fragile, pristine, and usually protected areas. …” As an eco-resident, one of my responsibilities is to protect the natural, unspoiled character of the Cape. When tourists visit Cape Cod, they come to experience this one-of-a-kind eco-masterpiece. They are true ecotourists.

What should we call those who want to visit a 25-square-mile array of 400-foot-tall wind turbines, each equipped with endlessly blinking red lights and relentless foghorns? These tourists advocate a monstrously expensive monstrosity that will almost certainly fall into disrepair before it pays for itself. I would call them industrial tourists. Maybe Hy-Line should also offer industrio-tours to the Pilgrim Nuclear Generating Station and other regrettable compromises.

To suggest that Cape Wind qualifies as an ecotourist destination is to commit the ultimate eco-blasphemy: greenwashing. If this is an unfamiliar term, it is also worth looking up.
