Draft policy for wind farms

by Michael McDonald, www.bayshorebroadcasting.ca 29 March 2011

The Town Of Saugeen Shores has adopted a draft policy on wind turbines.

The purpose of the policy is to provide developers with the parameters with which applications for Renewable Energy Approvals for wind projects will be reviewed.

The Town of Saugeen Shores’ comments to the Ministry of Energy will be based on compliance with this policy.

Part of the policy calls for wind turbines – large or small – to be located at least two thousand meters from urban areas within Saugeen Shores.

It also calls for large turbines to be located at least one thousand meters from a noise receptor – and 600 meters for small wind turbines.

Councillor Taunn Frosst expressed concerns about that particular aspect of the plan – stating it would unnecessarily restrict those within the urban area who are simply looking to cut down their energy costs.

The wind turbine policy will be presented in it’s final form at the April 11th council meeting.
