Shire to air wind farm planning worries

ABC News, www.abc.net.au 28 March 2011

The Pyrenees Shire will tell a Senate inquiry into wind farms in Ballarat today that there are shortcomings in the planning guidelines and compliance of the farms.

It is one of a group of rural south-west Victorian municipalities called to appear before the inquiry, which is examining the social and economic impacts of the industry.

Senators will tour a wind farm this morning and will hold a public forum at the University of Ballarat this evening.

Pyrenees Mayor Michael O’Connor says the council will be calling for better planning guidelines around wind farms.

“Our basic philosophy all along has been, and it will be presented to the Senate inquiry, is that we have no great objection to wind farms as such but we do have some … concerns regarding some of the planning issues, the compliance issues that currently surround wind farms, particularly in relation to noise and noise monitoring,” he said.
