Public cut out of turbine talk

www.southcoasttoday.com 27 March 2011

Recently, public meetings were held in New Bedford for siting wind turbines in 3,000 square miles of federal waters off Massachusetts that encompasses traditional fishing grounds.

There has never been any public input on the 400 square miles of ocean wind turbines agreed to in a memorandum of understanding between Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts and former Gov. Donald Carcieri of Rhode Island.

The MOU covers from 12 miles southwest of Martha’s Vineyard and extending 20 miles west into Rhode Island Sound.

The fishermen and the public should have been adequately consulted before the memorandum of understanding was agreed to last July, 2010.
