Bournedale gravel excavation is more evident off Scenic Highway

Bourne Courier, www.wickedlocal.com 24 March 2011

Gravel removal by Cape Cod Aggregates atop a hill off heavily traveled Scenic Highway in Bournedale has prompted rounds of telephone calls to Town Hall and historical commission members this week.

Another hill just north of the highway and west of the Bournedale traffic signal on Route 6 is being stripped of sediment. The results are visible from along Sandwich Road across the canal.

Town Planner Coreen Moore said the excavation has been reviewed and approved by the town. “They have been working within the confines of their permit,” she said. “But the work is more visible now.”

Moore said most townspeople do not attend public hearings when sand-and-gravel permits are approved. Then they call in protest when the work gets underway, she said.

Cape Cod Aggregates is owned by Sam Lorusso of Hyannis, a partner with Tudor Ingersoll of Buzzards Bay in the controversial New Generation Wind farm proposal now before Cape Cod Commission review.

The CCA property off Scenic Highway would accommodate at least one turbine if the wind-farm secures regional and local approval.
