Bluewater Wind plan to build wind farm off Delaware coast moves forward

LEWES, Del. – State and federal officials are preparing to offer the first lease of a commercial wind power site off the coast of Delaware.

Officials said Thursday that no potential competitors to NRG Bluewater Wind Delaware LLC have emerged, and that they will move forward with a noncompetitive leasing process.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the decision marks a milestone for the nation’s energy future, but he noted that several steps remain before a lease can be issued, including environmental reviews.

Once a lease is issued, Bluewater must submit detailed construction and operation plans that will be subject to further environmental review and public comment.

Bluewater has proposed building a wind farm about a dozen miles east of Dewey Beach and selling the power generated to Delmarva Power, the state’s largest utility.
