Wind farm opponents rally; Backdraft from proposal felt in Colebrook

COLEBROOK – Residents and some neighbors from Winsted and Norfolk stood up overwhelmingly in opposition to plans to build six wind turbines here during the first of two hearings on Tuesday.

Residents who spoke before the Connecticut Siting Council at Northwestern Regional High School in Winsted said the proposed turbines would destroy the serenity of their largely rural section of the Northwest Hills. More than 100 people attended the Tuesday night hearing, and about 40 spoke, most of them against the turbines.

Earlier in the day, about 40 people, the council and interested members of the public, trekked for more than three hours through snow, water, and mud, and up several hills, to visit all six proposed sites. Each site was marked by a large yellow sign. Trees in the surrounding area, destined to be cut down, were marked with blue dots.

BNE Energy of West Hartford wants to build six General Electric 1.6 megawatt turbines, each measuring 462 feet from the base to the tip of the blade. Three are planned for Flagg Hill Road and three for Rock Hall Road. Residents opposed to the project cited alleged effects wind turbines may have on health and raised concerns about a negative impact on property values.
