Duke Energy confirms map’s authenticity

By Bob Allen, Interlochen Public Radio, ipr.interlochen.org 17 March 2011

An official with Duke Energy now confirms the authenticity of a map being circulated by wind energy opponents. But the company also says details on the map are misleading.

Just yesterday another company official told IPR the information was totally inaccurate.

The map shows locations for more than 100 large turbines in Benzie and Manistee Counties.

Opponents say the tower locations were filed with air safety officials in Lansing and passed along to the Frankfort airport.

A spokesman for Duke Energy says the information is preliminary, filed to get feedback from aviation officials. He says decisions about the size of the towers and their exact locations still have to be made.

The map shows a concentration of turbines outside Arcadia in Manistee County. In Benzie County, the locations mostly run west of U.S. 31 to north of the Herring lakes.
