Manistee/Benzie wind turbine map circulated by opponents

There’s a map being circulated that shows where a big wind energy project would be built in northwest lower Michigan. The picture appears to be a snapshot of a web page showing the locations for more than a hundred turbines in Benzie and Manistee Counties.

Opponents of the project distributed the map. They say the tower locations were filed with air safety officials in Lansing and passed along to the Frankfort airport.

A spokeswoman for Duke Energy says the information is totally inaccurate. She says the company still is signing leases with landowners and there’s been no turbine placement yet.

The map shows a heavy concentration of turbines around Arcadia in Manistee County and a couple of lines of windmills run west of U.S. 31 slanting to north of Herring Lakes in Benzie County.

Three of the four townships in the target area have passed moratoriums on approving any large windmills. Local officials want to shore up their rules for things like how tall turbines can be and how far away from neighboring properties.
