Riga recall bid retooled, revived

The Advance, blissfieldadvance.com 15 March 2011

RIGA – Near the end of the Monday evening Riga Township meeting, township supervisor Jefferee Simon made an announcement to all in attendance.
“I got a call from the clerk Friday and a letter in the mail Saturday and I’m being recalled again,” Simon said.
Along with Simon, Richard Beagle, the township treasurer, is also being recalled.
A recall petition was filed by resident William Frantz on Feb. 14. In this petition, Simon and township clerk Karlene Goetz were named to be recalled, however that petition was struck down at a clarity hearing at the Lenawee County Probate Court on March 3. The reasoning behind the submission of the petition, Frantz says he believes the board member violated public trust by not working on behalf of all residents regarding the proposed wind turbine developments in the area.
After the original petition was denied Frantz reworded the petition, removed Goetz’s name, replaced her with Beagle, and submitted another petition last week. The wording was accepted, and now, according to Simon, a hearing is set up for 8:15 a.m. for Thursday, March 24 at the Probate Court.
“I will be there and oppose it,” Simon said to the crowd. “I’ve done nothing wrong. It’s not a problem.”
