The Advance, blissfieldadvance.com 15 March 2011

RIGA – Thursday’s Riga Township planning commission meeting saw the Riga Fire Department’s main hall packed from wall to wall. Residents of Riga, Ogden, Palmyra, Sylvania and beyond gathered to discuss the proposed Blissfield area wind farm and hear about the zoning ordinance recently drafted by the planning commission that regulates the implementation of wind turbines in Riga Township.
The proposed ordinance, which is a 26-page amendment to the 1976 zoning ordinance of Riga Township, places several restrictions on the development of “wind energy systems.”
Before discussion was opened to the public, chairman Reg Karg, using a microphone, asked that those wishing to speak get in line, sign their names on a list, keep their comments under three minutes, and be polite. Before long the line stretched down the west wall and around the back of the hall, an indication of the level of interest and controversy regarding the issue of the wind farms.
