Riga Twp. talks wind turbine zoning

RIGA TWP., MI – Riga Township is discussing changes to zoning that would allow wind turbines within township limits.

It was standing room only at a public hearing to discuss the issue Thursday night.

Some are concerned about the height of the turbines and others about the noise.

Surrounding communities like Sylvania are also paying attention since decisions could affect them.

“We hear people on both sides of it. We don’t really know what the overall consensus of the township is at this point. We might get a better idea tonight,” said Karlene Goetz, Riga Township Clerk.

“Once you do cross that state line, the population density changes dramatically and we just want to make sure that the welfare of our citizens is also being considered,” said John Jennewine, Sylvania Township Trustees Chairman.

In full disclosure: the National Association of Broadcasters along with the Michigan and Ohio Associations of Broadcasters have issued letters of concern to Riga Township about the positioning of these wind turbines and how they could affect broadcast signals.
