TOWNSHIP 16 – Noise, visual impact, shrinking property values and a lack of local control were among the concerns raised in requests for a public hearing on the $78.5-million Bull Hill Wind Project.
The state Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC), which is reviewing the permit application for the project, voted March 2 to grant requests for a hearing.
The hearing will likely be held in mid to late May.
The Bull Hill Wind Project involves the construction of nineteen 1.8-megawatt Vestas wind turbines on Bull Hill and Heifer Hill in Township 16. The project is proposed by Blue Sky East, a subsidiary of major wind developer First Wind.
The LURC received 13 public hearing requests.
Oliver Carr Jr. of Blue Hill wrote to the LURC about his family’s purchase of 7,000 acres of land adjacent to Eastbrook for environmental preservation.
“We believe that the despoliation of the hillside by erecting mammoth wind towers will not occur without subsidy and thus makes a mockery of creating an intelligent balance between maintaining a healthy natural habitat and serving human need,” Carr wrote.
