Wind: Township proposes 3,000 foot buffer

Windmills in Clay Banks Township would have to be at least 3,000 feet away from neighbors who are not part of the wind farm, under a new rule up for a vote next week in the township, south of Pentwater in Oceana County.
Communities all along the coast of Lake Michigan are trying to decide how far commercial wind turbines need to be kept from neighboring property.
The zoning administrator in Clay Banks Township, John Muchna, thinks 3,000 feet is the minimum distance needed to protect everyone’s health and safety.
He says that was the best the township could do, “to try and make everybody half way happy.
“The guys that stand to benefit by it are up in arms. They say it’s too much they want a 1,000 foot 9buffer),” he says.
Some opponents of wind developments say they want towers to be more than a mile away from homes outside a wind farm.
