Ditch wind power

The Herald, www.heraldscotland.com 28 February 2011

Kerr MacGregor suggests that hydro-power, a clean and reliable form of electricity generation, would provide adequate back-up for when the wind turbines fail to deliver (Letters, February 26).

In defending wind-generation, he is actually highlighting precisely what is wrong with it: the fact that it cannot be relied upon.

Is he seriously suggesting that hydro stations should stand idle just so a very small number of individuals can parade their green-ness, and while we get fleeced by the inflated electricity bills needed to pay for these grossly inefficient blots on our landscape?

It might make more sense, and save a lot of hassle, rather than spending billions on trashing Scotland’s landscape – not forgetting our fragile economy – to simply ditch wind power.
