Opponents protest Lowell wind project

Students, speakers and even sled dogs met in Montpelier Thursday to oppose the Lowell wind project.

Protestors say the project will affect tourism, school learning environments and business in the area.

They want the governor to know that this will dramatically change this quiet corner of the state.

“I think it’s pretty safe to say that that would be a dramatic change for the area up there,” said Lukas Snelling of Energize Vermont. “A lot of businesses rely on tourism up there and that will have an impact on that. Additionally a lot of folks live up there– there’s people within 3,000 feet of this project and there’s a substantial amount of noise that comes from these turbines and their health and livelihood will be impacted as well.”

“It’ll never replace Vermont Yankee in a million years. It’ll never displace base load power, it’s intermittent– they only work when the wind is blowing like two days out of the week, it’s a scam it’s a total scam to collect subsidies,” said Rob Phorzhimer of Sutton.

Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, visited Lowell Thursday and met with the select board and town officials. The governor continues to support the project.
