Hundreds pack hearing on Prospect wind turbines

BY QUANNAH LEONARD, REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN, www.rep-am.com 24 February 2011

PROSPECT – A hearing Wednesday on a proposed wind turbine project in town pulled impassioned pleas from people for and against the plan.

At least 450 local and area residents filled chairs and bleachers inside the gymnasium at Long River Middle School to tell members of the Connecticut Siting Council just how they feel about BNE Energy Inc.’s proposal to build two General Electric 1.6-megawatt wind generators at 178 New Haven Road.

Residents implored the council to deny the petition because the turbines would be too close to their homes and would risk their health, safety and quality of life. Others urged the council to approve the petition, citing new jobs and the importance of embracing renewable energy.

As of late Wednesday, the council was still accepting public comment. Today, members will begin an evidentiary hearing at 2 p.m., and then continue a second hearing at 6:30 p.m.
