Putnam County deemed alternative energy zone

OTTAWA – With a unanimous vote, the Putnam County Commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday encouraging the development of alternative energy generation facilities and declaring Putnam County an alternative energy zone.

“This resolution will be applicable to anyone who wants to come into Putnam County,” said Commissioner John Love.
The Commissioners are willing to provide real and tangible personnel property tax exemption to support the development of alternative energy generation facilities, provided the appropriate service payments are made.

Citing Ohio Senate Bill 232 in developing the resolution, the Commissioners are requiring the sum of annual service payments to equal $9,000.00 for each megawatt of nameplate capacity of the energy facility. Ohio Senate Bill 232 is the Renewable and Advanced Energy Jobs Bill enacted by the Senate in 2010 and was recently renewed.

“We are following Ohio Senate Bill 232 in this,” said Commissioner Vincent Schroeder. “Also by declaring Putnam County an alternative energy zone opens it up to all energy companies and also takes care of solar cells or any other alternative energy.”

“We wanted to specify the $9,000 in this resolution,” added Love.

This resolution was developed after reviewing similar resolutions approved in Van Wert and Paulding counties, according to the Commissioners. The two counties are currently in the construction phase where Iberdrola Renewables is constructing a wind farm that will eventually include 152 wind turbines that each will put out two megawatts of power.
