Northland shrinks size of wind farm

NORTHEAST TOWN— Northland Power has altered its plan for the McLean’s Mountain Wind Farm, removing or relocating 10 turbines in response to concerns from the community about the project’s impact.
The change reduces the project size from 43 to 33 turbines, which will produce 60 megawatts of power (down from 77).
Seven of the 17 turbines scheduled for Honora Bay have been removed from the scheme, and turbines have been pulled back from the edge of the bluff, reduced from two rows to one. Near Perch Lake, turbines have been pulled back a full kilometre from the nearest resident.
In the case of turbines 1, 2, and 4, located near Morphet’s Side Road, Rick Martin, senior project manager for the wind farm, said the company was not required by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to move the turbines, but that the company made the move in response to community concerns.
“Lots of people don’t think we listen, but we do,” Mr. Martin said. “We’ve made some significant changes.”
The move is part of a mitigation effort to work with the community to alleviate some of the concerns residents have with the placement of the turbines, he added.
