Govt’s wind farm policy to face first test

ABC News, www.abc.net.au 22 February 2011

The Victorian Government’s proposed new wind farm policy will face its first test today.

The Coalition has pledged to stop wind farms from being built within two kilometres of homes, without the consent of residents.

The Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, has called in a proposed three turbine wind farm at Chepstowe, near Ballarat, which is close to one occupied dwelling.

The Pyrenees Shire mayor, Michael O’Conner, says the outcome could help to shape the future of other proposals in the region.

“We’d be very interested in seeing what line the minister takes in relation to planning guidelines for wind farms,” he said.

“It certainly will give councils a much better appreciation of what the Government’s view is in relation to the planning issues surrounding them.”

A hearing into the future of the facility will begin in Melbourne today.
