County OKs noisier wind turbines

LAFAYETTE— A northern Indiana county has approved noisier wind turbines despite some residents’ worries that turning up the volume on the hulking power-generating machines may disrupt their sleep.

The Tippecanoe County Commissioners approved on a 2-1 vote Monday changes to a county ordinance that will allow large wind turbines to generate an average sound output of 50 decibels per hour.

According to Purdue University, 50 decibels is about the noise produced by an electrical transformer at 100 feet.

Commissioner Tom Murtaugh voted in favor of the changes. He tells the Journal and Courier that an annual wind turbine inspection offers protections for nearby residents.

Tippecanoe County resident Robert Brooks says he worries the sound will disrupt his family’s sleep and make it hard for him to sell his home.
