Powerful cause for concerns

I read with interest your article in the Carmarthen Journal of January 19 on the proposed wind farm for Llanllwni Mountain.

As Countryside Officer for Lampeter Ramblers’ Group (part of the Ramblers’ Association) I have already voiced our strong objections to the applications to the county Council. The grounds of our objections can be summarised as follows:

1. The detrimental effects the development would have on this area of tranquil open moorland, with the subsequent loss of enjoyment and appreciation of its special environment by our members on their walks.

2. The visual impact of these large turbines on the area. They would be out of scale with surrounding landscape and seen not only around Mynydd Llanllwni itself, but from other upland areas used by walkers.

3. The noise produced not only by these 21 large turbines, but also the possible cumulative effects created by the combined noise from this and the other proposed wind farms in the Brechfa area.

4. The effect on tourism in relation to fellow ramblers who have chosen this area in the past for their walking holidays. This would, in turn, have a detrimental effect on the local economy.

5. The adverse effect on wildlife in this area. The red kites are prized in this area of Wales for their remarkable recovery from the brink of extinction. They are numerous around the area surrounding Llanllwni Mountain. Inevitably, there will be casualties resulting from kites and other birds flying into turbine blades.

6. The considerable disruption and restricted access to everyone for 16 months in the building phase of this development. It seems from the application that the foundations of one turbine alone would require 50 lorry-loads of ready-mixed concrete to be delivered in one day.

These are our main areas of objection and I do hope that others will think about this development long and hard. We need everyone who has objections to write individually to the County Council, since each individual objection counts.
