Wind power doesn’t work

The Daily News Record, www.dailynews-record.com 12 February 2011

Apropos of Wednesday’s editorial about gas prices, which discussed the administration’s fixation on renewable energy, herewith an instructive and cautionary tale, one that goes beyond our basic queries about the wind not blowing all the time and the sun not shining but for a certain number of hours (none of which, given the possibility of cloud cover, are guaranteed).

England – as Jack Kelly, national security writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, recently stated – is in the grip of its coldest winter in a century. The weather has been tougher on some Brits – namely those reliant on the island’s 3,150 wind turbines for electricity and heat – more than others.

The turbines, you see, have been “seizing up” due to the cold. To prevent this, they’ve been heated, with this startling result: They have consumed more juice than they’ve actually generated.

Even conveniently forgetting the fact that turbines are eyesores, are hell on the bird and bat populations, and can make humans sick, why would anyone want to rely on this “energy” source?

Seriously?
