Wind doesn’t work

Professional Engineering, profeng.com

Almost every issue of Professional Engineering contains one or more contributions from well meaning but misguided individuals who mistakenly believe that wind power is the way forward.

Which part of ‘they don’t work’ do these people not understand? Recent figures that came my way indicated that the Scottish wind farms had produced about 17% of their rated output over the year and that the figure for the UK as a whole was about 7%. Add to this that current best estimates put wind generated electricity at 11.2p/kWh compared to 4p/kWh for coal or new build Nuclear and the picture looks pretty bleak.

Wind turbines are generally built on a mass concrete or concrete pile base. It is well known that the manufacture of cement is probably the single most polluting process around so why waste it on products that do not deliver.
