Shumlin supports Lowell wind project

Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, supports a controversial wind power project in the Northeast Kingdom.

Green Mountain Power wants to build 21 wind turbines on a ridgeline in Lowell. It would be the largest wind project in Vermont.

The Governor’s Natural Resources Agency worked out an agreement Friday with GMP to support the development.

GMP will now create buffer zones around bear habitat, limit human activity on the ridgeline and also have a plan to tear down the towers at the end of the project’s life.

Regulators on the Public Service Board still have to OK the project. And the Shumlin administration plans to testify in support of the project.
