Only off-shore wind farm cost taxpayers £1.5 million

Scunthorpe Telegraph, www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk 12 February 2011

As plans for an offshore wind revolution in the Humber area continue, it was revealed that North Lincolnshire’s only operational onshore wind farm cost taxpayers almost £1.5 million to subsidise last year.

As reported in the Scunthorpe Telegraph, the Renewable Energy Foundation found the Bagmoor Farm worked at just 27.2 per cent of its annual capacity in 2010. A report by the foundation showed the wind farm had to be subsidised by £1.47 million.

The foundation’s director, Dr John Constable, called on the Government to review levels of public subsidy. His challenge came as Energy Minister Charles Henry warned it was wrong for inefficient wind turbines to receive “significant” public subsidies and said turbines need to be positioned where the wind is best.
