North Cumbria villagers gear up for new wind turbines fight

The Cumberland News, www.cumberlandnews.co.uk 11 February 2011

Villagers are gearing up for a fresh fight against wind turbine plans that they fear could blight their homes.

A public meeting will be held in Cumwhinton next week ahead of a new bid to build turbines being tabled.

Bolsterstone Innovative Energy’s plans for three 377ft-tall turbines at Newlands Farm were thrown out last year after a public inquiry. Now the firm is preparing to submit two new planning applications – one for two turbines, the other for just one. They would be smaller than those originally planned.

Opposition to any turbines, however, remains in Cumwhinton, where villagers rallied last time with the Against Newlands Windfarm Action Group.

And residents are being urged to turn out for a meeting in the village hall on Tuesday, at 7.30pm, where campaigners will again consider what steps they should take.

Bolsterstone’s original application by Carlisle City Council was rejected in 2008 with the authority arguing the turbines would be “seriously detrimental”.

The firm appealed and the planning inspector accepted in 2009 that the turbines would cause “some harm” to the landscape, but that this would not be “significant”.
