Inadequate wind energy production monitoring

REVOLT Newsletter 320, 11/02/2010, revolt.co.uk

Wind energy production supplied to the National Grid is being monitored by Ian Murdoch for North Hambleton Windfarm Action Group (NHWAG). The results show how low wind power generation into the national grid really is, especially during the cold spells, and how the output varies very significantly hour to hour and day to day. Ian says:

“I have finally received confirmation from D.E.C.C. that the only figures they have for Output from Wind Generators are the monthly figures compiled by OFGEM from the Renewable Obligation Certificate Returns (or claims). Hence, they are not aware, or even interested, in the hour by hour and day by day variations in wind output.

“The government, therefore, can have no idea how much fossil fuel is being burnt in stand-by generators to deal with this variation. Nor, can they have any understanding of the need long term to develop a strategy for effective back up systems for wind generators.”
