Villagers sign petition to stop wind turbine being built at wildlife haven

Scunthorpe Telegraph, www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk 11 February 2011

Residents are battling to block plans to build a 218ft wind turbine in an area renowned for being a wildlife haven.

Truelove Farms in Worlaby has submitted a planning application to North Lincolnshire Council to build a turbine on land west of Elsham Road, Worlaby.

Campaigners presented Worlaby Parish Council with a petition containing 248 signatures (86 per cent of Worlaby residents) at its meeting on Wednesday night.

Seven per cent supported the application and the remaining seven per cent did not take part.

On the night, councillors voted unanimously against the Wind Turbine Application.

The residents requested the petition be submitted by the Parish Council along with other evidence to the North Lincolnshire Council Planning Committee to go forward to the final enquiry.

Worlaby resident Pauline Watson said: “At the very least, many residents argued that, on the whole, any development of wind turbine sites should be well away from residential development, nature reserves, or sensitive ecological areas. Worlaby Cars, in particular, is an important site for buzzards, short-eared owls, and the protected marsh and hen harriers. A wind turbine so close to such an important site for wildlife is particularly insensitive.”

Pauline said residents acknowledge the need for alternative forms of energy but believe it should be discussed properly.

She said: “We are delighted that following the presentation of this petition the Parish Council voted unanimously against the Wind Turbine development and the fight continues. At the weekend we hope to erect a number of full size signs in private garden along the main road of Worlaby underling our continued opposition to the proposed development. These signs have been paid for from residents’ pockets.”

The Telegraph made attempts to contact the applicant but he was unavailable at the time of going to press.
