New Hartford Town Board passes moratorium on wind projects

NEW HARTFORD – The Town Board voted unanimously Wednesday night to pass a moratorium on wind projects that will last through the end of the year or until the board acts upon wind zoning regulations.

No wind projects have been proposed for New Hartford, but Town Board members say they are attempting to proactively establish wind ordinances to be prepared in case a project comes forward.

A Zoning Law Advisory Committee also was re-established Wednesday night to review the zoning of wind projects and make a recommendation to the board.

By instituting the moratorium either through the end of the year or until the board acts on the committee’s recommendations, the town won’t be rushed into anything and will be able to avoid any accusations of establishing a moratorium in response to any specific project proposals that arise, town Supervisor Patrick Tyksinski said.

“I think the idea is just to give us time to look at it,” he said.

The members of the advisory committee will be former town Supervisor Ralph Humphreys, Jack Jones, William Delaney, G. Brymer Humphreys, Tim Tallman, William Smith and Mark Krasinski. Town Codes Officer Joseph Booth said he will act as the committee chairman.

In other business: The Town Board unanimously voted to award the Elm Street bridge construction contract to the Economy Paving Co. out of Cortland for $594,832. The project is expected to take about three months beginning in April. One lane will be closed during construction, and traffic over the bridge will be one-way.
