DUC applauds Ontario’s move to a precautionary approach to wind power development

Ducks Unlimited Canada, www.ducks.ca 11 February 2011

Barrie, ON, February 11, 2011 – Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) commends the Province of Ontario on taking a precautionary approach to offshore wind power development. Although DUC supports environmentally sustainable sources of energy that reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, we continue to stress the importance of peer reviewed science to ensure renewable energy projects are implemented in a manner (and location) that does not negatively impact waterfowl populations.

“We are pleased to see the Ontario Government slow the implementation of offshore wind developments” says James Brennan, Manager of Provincial Operations – Ontario “DUC encourages the Province to take a similar precautionary approach in all areas of continentally significant waterfowl habitat particularly along the lower Great Lakes”

We encourage the Government of Ontario to implement rigorous, peer reviewed scientific study and environmental monitoring to ensure that the potential impacts of both offshore and inland developments are better understood. DUC will continue to promote and partner in relevant research initiatives, lending our knowledge and experience to strengthen the understanding of the potential impacts of wind turbines on waterfowl.

DUC has been implementing its habitat conservation program across Ontario since 1974. We have dedicated our resources to restoring and protecting natural wetlands for the benefit of waterfowl and also for the people and the plants and animals that use them. With over 35,000 supporters and in partnership with all levels of government and more than 2,300 private landowners across the province, DUC has conserved 916,110 acres of wetland habitat across Ontario.
