Stornoway Wind Farm submits grid application

Stornoway Gazette, www.stornowaygazette.co.uk 10 February 2011

A major milestone in the development of The Stornoway Wind Farm has been reached today with the submission of a grid application to the National Grid by Lewis Wind Power. This application supports the work done by National Grid and Scottish Hydro Electric to deliver a new grid connection for the Western Isles.

The application is for a project of up to 150 MW to the south west of Stornoway. This application is based on the turbine layout that was presented in Stornoway at the public exhibition in November 2010.

The project developers want to assure local residents that a final design layout for the wind farm is yet to be agreed. It is expected that Lewis Wind Power will be in a position to accept a connection offer from National Grid in the summer of 2011.

Ron Peddie, Project Director for Lewis Wind Power said:

This grid application is not only a milestone for the Stornoway Wind Farm; it is also a hugely significant step in the wider development of renewables in the Western Isles. We believe that a subsea interconnector is crucial in securing our project. If the interconnector is not secured, then none of the beneficial renewables projects will be viable, including the significant potential to develop marine renewables on the west coast of Lewis. This represents a serious step in fulfilling our commitment to deliver the Stornoway Wind Farm and to bring significant local economic benefits to Lewis.”

A Public Exhibition took place in November in Stornoway which gave local residents their first opportunity to comment on the project. These have been followed by local information sessions run by the project’s community consultation coordinator. The next exhibitions will take place in Stornoway on 15th and 16th March where residents and other stakeholders will have another opportunity to give their views of the development.
