Windfarm – decision is put on hold

Campaigners’ hopes of victory in their battle against a windfarm in Stinchcombe were dashed at the 11th hour yesterday when new information about turbine noise was submitted.

The last-minute report about the potential nuisance from four Next Generation windmills meant the decision on the controversial scheme was deferred.

Dozens of objectors to the windmills at Berkeley Road were in the Stroud District Council chamber as the development control committee postponed debate until its next meeting in mid-March.

Time had to be allowed for the additional facts, provided by Stroud-based applicants Next Generation, to be considered by both protestors and supporters of the scheme, councillors heard.

“It is a very major, very significant development,” head of planning Phil Skill told the meeting.

He said all facts had to be properly included in his officers’ recommendation about whether or not the windfarm should be allowed.

Next Generation has said its four, 120m-high Stinchcombe turbines would provide clean wind energy to boost government targets towards helping to prevent global warming.

Hundreds of objectors, especially Stinchcombe residents, have complained the turbines would be noisy and be a blight on the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
